Sainik Schools were introduced in India in 1961 with the primary aim of preparing boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy. The objectives of Sainik schools are to remove regional imbalance in the officer cadre of the defence services, to develop qualities of body, mind and character which will enable the young boys of today to become good and useful citizens of tomorrow and to bring public school education within the reach of the common man.
ABOUT SAINIK SCHOOL
This Scheme Established in 1961 by Ministry of Defence. Primary aim of the scheme is to prepare boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy.
Other objectives of the schools are:-
-To remove regional imbalance in the officer cadre of the defence services.
-To develop qualities of body, mind and character which will enable the young boys of today to become good and useful; citizens of tomorrow.
-To bring public school education within the reach of the common man.
To achieve this, school provides comprehensive education:-
(a) To bring each cadet to an educational standard which will enable him to complete successfully in the open competition for admission to the National Defence Academy.
(b) To train each cadet in a manner, which will instill in him qualities of self reliance and confidence and enable him to derive full benefit from the courses of instruction at the National Defence Academy.
(c) To render cadets physically fit to take their place at the N.D.A. and later to face with courage and endurance the hardships inseparable from life in the Armed Forces.
(d) To impart training to all cadets so that in consonance with national spirit they could conduct themselves with confidence in any society, and
(e) To infuse in all cadets a sense of loyalty, patriotism, individual and corporate responsibility for leading a purposeful life as honest and useful citizens of India.
ORGANISATIONAL SET UP
A Board of Governors, functioning under the Chairmanship of the Defence Minister, is the Chief Executive body of the Sainik Schools Society. With a view to exercising closer control and supervision over the affairs of Sainik Schools, there is an Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of Defence Secretary. The Chief Ministers or the Education Ministers of the States in which the Schools are located, are among the members of the Board of Governors. An officer of the Ministry of Defence, nominated to supervise and co-ordinate the functioning of the Sainik Schools, functions as the Joint Secretary of the Sainik Schools Society. The Joint Secretary is assisted by officers and staff of the Ministry of Defence including two Inspecting Officers, of the rank of Colonel or equivalent.
